Choose a Slab for Your Island
An island is a versatile prep and serving surface, and often the first one people see, so the slab matters. Choose quartz, granite, quartzite or marble in a tone that complements your cabinets, and pick the exact slab before we cut.

With natural stone, we plan the island layout around the veining and grain, so the best part of the slab sits on top. We can hold your slab free for two weeks, and a special-order slab takes about a month. For a full material comparison, see our kitchen countertops page.
Quartz Island Tops
Pros

  • A uniform pattern. Quartz slabs match well across a large island top and suit a minimalist kitchen.
  • Low-maintenance. Quartz is generally non-porous and, unlike butcher block, needs no sealing or natural oil finish.

Cons

  • Heat. Use a trivet near the cooktop, since sudden heat can damage the surface.
  • Indoors only. Direct sun can fade quartz.

See our quartz countertops for more colors.

Granite Island Tops

Pros

  • A durable surface. Granite resists scratches better than a butcher block or wood island top and stands up well to prep, cooking and serving.
  • Unique slabs. Each granite slab has its own grain, from cool grays to warmer, richer browns.

Cons

  • Sealing. Granite needs sealing about once a year, or as the sealer label says.
  • Weight. Large granite pieces are heavy and need a stable base.

Quartzite Island Tops

Pros

  • Natural beauty. Quartzite pairs distinct, marble-like veining with a hard stone.
  • Good with heat. It handles warm cookware better than quartz, though a trivet still helps.

Cons

  • Sealing. Plan to reseal about every 10 to 12 months.
  • Higher price. Quartzite sits at a higher price point, and prices vary by slab.

Marble Island Tops

Pros

  • An elegant centerpiece. Flowing veining makes the island stand out in a contemporary or classic kitchen.
  • Cool to the touch. Bakers like marble for pastry work, since it stays cooler than a wood island top.

Cons

  • Etching and stains. Acids can dull marble, and the stone can absorb a spill, so wipe it quickly.
  • Waterfall limits. Some marbles can chip at a mitered waterfall joint.

Installation
Planning a new kitchen island countertop in Charleston? We handle your project from the first conversation to the final installation, so you work with one team. Here is how it works.

  • Consultation. Share your plans, photos or drawings and tell us how you cook and use your island.
  • Measurement and base check. We measure your kitchen or review your plans, and we check that the island base is level and can carry the stone.
  • Template and layout. You approve the slab, edge profile, seams, overhang, waterfall ends and the sink and cooktop cutouts before we cut.
  • Fabrication. We cut, shape and polish the island top in our own workshop, on 3 cm slabs for almost every project.
  • Delivery. We deliver the pieces to your home and plan the path for large, heavy tops.
  • Installation. Our crew sets the stone, finishes the seams and cleans up before we leave.

Your estimate lists the slab, square footage, edge profile, waterfall ends, sink and cooktop cutouts, supports, delivery and installation. Removal of your old countertop can be added to your estimate. Plumbing reconnection, painting and touch-ups are handled by other specialists. Our lead times average about 14 to 17 days to installation, and we confirm your schedule with your estimate.
Seams, Waterfall Ends and Cutouts
An oversized island top may need more than one slab. Many islands can be cut from one piece, and the largest one-piece island we have made measured 139 by 79 inches. When a seam is needed, we place it where it is least visible, match the veining and show you the seam layout before we cut.

A waterfall end carries the stone vertically down the side of the island to the floor, joined at a mitered corner. Waterfall ends on both sides add about 30 percent to the project. Not every stone suits a waterfall. Soft, porous stones and some marbles can chip at the joint or absorb the glue and leave a spotty seam, and we tell you before you order.

We cut the openings for an undermount or workstation sink, a cooktop and outlets to your fixture specifications. We keep popular undermount and workstation sinks in stock, or you can supply your own.

Most kitchens get a flat edge profile. A double bullnose or mitered edge adds work and cost, and a mitered edge gives a 3 cm slab a thicker look.
Measurements and Support Requirements
A standard kitchen countertop is about 25 1/2 inches deep, while an island top has no standard sizes and is made to order for your base, seating and walkways. We measure every dimension on site or review your plans, then make an exact template.

  • A solid base. The island cabinets must be level, sound and fixed in place. Fix damaged cabinets and any leaks before we template.
  • Support for overhangs. A seating overhang or a long open span may need brackets or a support frame, so the stone does not crack. We confirm the support plan during templating.
  • Heavy sinks. A cast-iron sink needs a support frame, which costs about $150.
  • Set fixtures first. A farmhouse sink should sit in its final place before we template.
  • Delivery path. Island pieces are large and heavy. Tell us about steps, narrow doors or tight turns, so we plan the path and the crew.

We also check the plumbing, old wiring and floor level before fabrication, which matters in older Charleston homes with uneven floors.
